It was a big day for the Lawndale-Hawthorne basketball rivalry. Lawndale’s girls made a big fourth quarter comeback before Hawthorne won the game in overtime. Afterwards, Lawndale’s boys used that momentum to thrash Hawthorne in dominating fashion.
To make the game more special, Lawndale’s administration planned to have students walk to Hawthorne – a 1.5 mile walk down Inglewood Ave. Unfortunately, it was called off due to a low turnout.
It didn’t keep a dedicated portion of students showing up to pack Hawthorne for the games but I guess the idea of walking it out in the cold was too much. To which I say, I understand completely but I hope the weather was more a factor than just disinterest in something that seemed like a great tradition to start.
Considering Lawndale-Leuzinger had a thrilling double overtime game marred by fights and ejections, this was a great idea that bring some positive energy to another rivalry. I just hope Lawndale tries something similar again because the school has a very promising athletic program that deserves support.
Showing up at games isn’t a problem but sometimes the buildup can be just as fun and a great part of the high school experience.
