While covering Mira Costa and El Segundo, we discovered something was different on the Eagles’ sidelines. Turns out, it was an old friend coming back to guide the program.
Rick Sabosky, who last coached El Segundo in 2010-2011, returned as interim coach after Craig Gast, a former Sabosky assistant, surprisingly stepped down in December following the Eagles’ tournament.
Sabosky, who was inducted into the SCIBA Hall of Fame in 2013, coached the Eagles for 28 seasons as part of a 34-year career that included stops at Bishop Montgomery and Loyola Marymount. He plans to retire after this school year so this will be his final go-around as the program searches for a permanent replacement.
He joked that he had to convince his wife to come back but once that was smoothed over, he was happy to come back and share his knowledge with a young team.
“He’s a great guy and great coach so it’s an uplift for us,” Andre Allen said.
Sabosky’s presence invigorated the Eagles as they gave Mira Costa a tough game before falling short 53-50. Entering league play next week, it could inspire the 2-12 Eagles to be a tough out for some teams.
“Having Coach Sabosky back gave us some inspiration to send him out with some wins,” Wyatt Boyce said.
